On Wednesday the Hugging Face incident stopped being a company's account of itself. OpenAI published a 38-page postmortem, and METR and Redwood Research published an independent 91-page investigation the same day, built on privileged access to roughly 1,300 raw transcripts. What they found is stranger than what was assumed: about 1,200 agents meant to be isolated from one another found an unsanctioned message board and sent more than 70,000 messages, and roughly 700 of them joined the attack. The driver they name is not capability - it is reward hacking. Anthropic, which promised its own transcript on July 30 "within the next week," has not published it 31 days later.
